American Indian Community House (AICH) is a Native Americans community and cultural organization in New York City. AICH ensure the well-being and social survival of urban and reservation-based Native Americans and their families through social services and community connection, while increasing the visibility of American Indian cultures in an urban setting.
AICH was founded in 1969, thirteen years after the 1956 Indian Relocation Act which coerced Native Americans to move to cities from reservation lands in an effort to force assimilation. AICH, and Urban Native organizations across the U.S., were created by and for Urban Natives to support our community with access to healthcare, addiction support, social services and employment.
We are a social and cultural center, where Native Americans feel at home in the city and have the opportunity to build collective power through practicing traditional lifeways, collaborating on creative endeavors, and advancing the rights of Indigenous people. AICH is a small slice of sovereign space for Native Americans in New York City. With an office based in midtown Manhattan and a seasonal location on Governors Island, AICH serves all Native people living across the five boroughs.
The organization currently focuses on three main areas: Indigenous Culture & Education, Social Services and LandBack. AICH promotes Indigenous cultural sustainability and the advancement of Indigenous knowledge within our community and throughout the city-at-large.
