Cherokee Historical Association

Cherokee Historical Association is a nonprofit organization operating on the Qualla Boundary in Cherokee, NC. Our mission is to share Cherokee history, culture, and the triumphant story of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians with the world. We do this through excellence in the arts, education, living history, and cultural preservation. 

We operate two attractions in the cultural district of Cherokee - Oconaluftee Indian Village living history museum and Unto These Hills outdoor drama. 

Oconaluftee Indian Village is an open air living history museum modeled after a 1700s era Cherokee village. Visitors take a guided tour, led by own of our knowledgeable delegates. The tour stops at several craft stations where artisans are actively working on traditional crafts such as finger weaving and baskets. Visitors also Geta chance to step inside cabins from various areas of Cherokee history. At the square grounds, visitors learn about the seven Cherokee clans and see a traditional social dance demonstration. Inside the replica council house, visitors learn about our matrilineal society and system of government. We offer a concession stand with snacks and a gift shop with handmade items. 

Unto These Hills performs under the stars each summer at Mountainside Theatre. It is the third oldest outdoor drama in the country and has been seen by over six million visitors since opening in 1950. The historic play tells the story of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from first contact with European colonizers through the removal west on the infamous Trail of Tears. Unto These Hills features exciting battle scenes with pyrotechnics, beautiful dances, heart wrenching drama, and an important message.
