Our food bank is operated by our Tribal 501(c)3 non-profit, the Monacan Nation Cultural Foundation. Our goal has always been to provide culturally appropriate, healthful food to those in need, while promoting the sovereignty of Monacan people to shape the food systems that nourish our community.
Our 5-person staff operate weekly food distribution, serving over 8,000 clients in 2024, 25% of whom were Seniors (Tribal and non-Tribal). Additionally, we maintain a 13-bed garden, small green house and seed distribution program. We are in the early phases of a significant expansion of our garden to an additional plot on Tribally owned land. This work will serve as the foundation of our traditional food revitalization and food sovereignty efforts. This is a joint venture with the Tribal government and aims to eventually become a sustainable, economic development activity for our people.
