The National American Indian Court Judges Association (NAICJA) is a non-profit membership organization that supports and strengthens American Indian and Alaska Native tribal justice systems through education, information sharing, and advocacy.
Mission and Goals
Founded in 1969 after the Indian Civil Rights Act of 1968, NAICJA initially focused on educating tribal judges to comply with new requirements. Its mission now includes securing funding, advocating for tribal justice systems, providing culturally appropriate judicial education, improving inter-judicial cooperation, and offering support and networking opportunities.
Structure and Membership
NAICJA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a Board of Directors representing ten regions. Membership includes current and former tribal judges, state court judges, court personnel, and legal professionals.
Programs and Resources
NAICJA provides training and technical assistance, including through Bureau of Justice Assistance programs covering areas like indigent legal aid and Indian Child Welfare. We host an annual National Tribal Judicial and Court Personnel Conference, produce publications and podcasts, and offer networking opportunities and a listserv for members.
