Help support Little Earth's wildly productive Urban Farm Program over the coming year!
Like Brandon displaying burdock above, our Farm has burst with community activity and enthusiasm under the vision of Farm Director Jonas Kazlauskas, who leads all operations and both youth and adult programs centered on growing. š½ The work of the Farm brings our community ever closer to its goal of Native Food Sovereignty and empowers our youth to become the next generation of leaders.
This past year, the Farm's Youth Summer Farm Program welcomed 25 youth ages 6-12 who learned how to plant, harvest, cook and prepare food and medicine for the community. Each earned a stipend to buy clothes and supplies for the school year. Ten teens earned entry to the Farm's Teen Internship Program where they cared for garden beds, ran the Farm Stand, demonstrated cooking techniques, and distributed fresh produce throughout the community. Their biggest role is mentoring the younger ones.
Little Earth's Urban Farm ensures food security seasonally by delivering produce door-to-door to every resident in need and offering free produce at the weekly farmstand right in their backyard. Our teens demonstrate recipes with fresh produce in the Farm's outdoor kitchen, and they can cook!
The Farm now offers Adult Work Opportunities to help with farm work and food distribution--low barrier employment that provides a way for residents to connect with their local food system.
Can an Urban Farm program be year round? Ours is! Starting with a weather station at the Farm (thanks to Best Buy Foundation) and internet radio, Little Earth teens will be broadcasting hyper-local weather forecasts live for the community this winter.
In Native Food Sovereignty we see the path to robust community-owned structures for meeting our needs and for extending our knowledge to the greater community of urban farmers. Our work and vision take resources to sustain, and we hope you will pause and say, this is good for us all!
Thank you for giving!
