Abiinooji Aki Inc. (AAI), supported by the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribe, and GLIFWC, organized the first symposium for Women and Water Coming Together (WWCTS) in 2016 on the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation near Hayward, WI. The Women & Water Coming Together Symposium was inspired by Ojibwe Grandmother and AAI Director/Founder-Maryellen Baker, Niiyogiizhigookwe. The symposium brought together participants from different locations across the United States. With this first WWCTS successfully completed, we began organizing for the future WWCTS, focusing on how to expand our work. In this 10th year we are planning the Women & Water Indigenous International Clean Water Summit, Sept. 24-27, 2026.

Over the past ten years, the Women and Water Coming Together Symposium (WWCTS) has grown from a community-centered gathering into a powerful movement rooted in Indigenous knowledge, relationship, and responsibility to water. Grounded in Anishinaabe teachings, WWCTS has brought together women, elders, youth, and water protectors to share teachings, strengthen cultural practices, and respond to the urgent need for clean, accessible water in our communities. Each year has built upon the last—expanding partnerships, deepening ceremony, and amplifying Indigenous women’s leadership in environmental advocacy and healing. This decade of collective work has created a strong and intentional pathway to the Women and Water Indigenous International Clean Water Summit (WWIICWS), “Completing the Dream Through Healing and Prayer" to carry forward the knowledge, relationships, and spirit of WWCTS, while remaining rooted in community, culture, and the sacred responsibility to protect water for generations to come.

The goal of the Clean Water Summit is to bring over 5,000 women together to empower them so they can stand up for clean water laws for future life to come. Currently we are building programs, writing letters to donors and holding events to raise funds for this essential culturally designed program.
