Our Mission
We are the Carmel Band of Rumsen Indians, and we are setting out on a sacred journey to return to our ancestral home at the Carmel Mission. Our mission is to provide a proper "crossover" ceremony for our ancestors—those who were buried in mass grave sites in the mission ground—and to lovingly restore and beautify their burial sites. This project is about more than just restoration; it is about healing, dignity, and ensuring our people are sent home with the respect and traditional ceremonies they deserve.
Why We Need Your Help
The journey from Southern California to Northern California is long, and this project requires several trips to complete the delicate work of fixing the sites and preparing the final ceremony. Many of our tribal families are currently facing financial hardships or are living on low incomes. We believe that no family member should be left behind due to the cost of travel. We are raising funds to cover:
- Transportation: Fuel and vehicle costs for multiple trips from Southern California to Carmel.
- Lodging & Meals: Modest accommodations for families during the restoration phases and the final ceremony.
By donating, you are directly supporting the reunification of a community with its history. You are helping a family travel hundreds of miles to stand where their ancestors stood and to participate in a once in a lifetime spiritual homecoming.
Every dollar goes toward ensuring our elders, our youth, and our families can be present to participate and witness in this sacred work.
Please join us in bringing our ancestors peace and bringing our families home.
